Curtains are essential for any room. Having the right curtain in the home can brighten up the entire setting. It may seem like it is a simple process to choose a curtain but hold that thought! Certain essential things need to be considered before buying curtains.

If you are moving into a new house or renovating your old one, you might need new curtains. Now before you hit the road and shop for your window treatment options, consider the following factors:

Fabric

Fabric is a significant factor when it comes to curtains. Since curtains are not only for appearance, they must deliver the functionality you are looking for. Curtains can either be of thick or thin fabric. The former works very well in rooms where you want to restrict the entry of natural light. And the latter is best for spaces that receive low natural light and moderate warm breeze. Thick curtains act as insulation for areas of cold and also give a certain kind of privacy. If you live in a hot and humid place, cotton or linen curtains will work great for you. They are light and breezy and can keep your room cool.

If you want to go for thick fabric, try luxurious materials like velvet, faux, and linen with lining. These fabrics hang best and give a very sophisticated appeal. You can also use cotton and silk with lining. Curtains are also used coupled with draperies. This gives you an option to be very versatile. It works great for people who live in areas of excellent temperature difference in a day.

Color

The colour of the fabric determines the tone of your room. If you prefer a minimalistic setting, go for neutral colours in alignment with the colour of your walls. The right colour of the fabric brings out the fabric best. Dark colours are best suited for velvet and silk. Since these are difficult to maintain, it is best to go for dark colours.

You can also go for prints and patterns for a more vibrant look. Make sure that the prints are in sync with the colour of the room and the furniture. You can also add a dash of pop with trendy ties for the draperies.

Length and Lining

First of all, you must decide the length of your curtain. Decide how high you want it to be. If you're going to give an illusion of height, get a curtain that starts 3 to 4 inches above your window and touches the ground. This makes the room look highly tied up and neat. If you are somewhat of a perfectionist and want an exact length, you can always opt for custom drapes online

However, if you have kids running around, you should keep the curtains two inches above the ground lest they trip and fall. Make sure that your curtain has a clean hem to give an overall neat look.

The lining is essential for thin fabrics like cotton and linen. Having draperies with lining is great for blocking sunlight and wind. This method lets you use maintenance-friendly material without compromising on privacy.

Width

If you want to pick the perfect drapery, deciding the correct width is very important. Ideally, it would help if you got a drapery that is double the width of your window. This ensures that the curtain drapes very well and looks nice. The drape of the curtain is essential for the aesthetic appeal that draperies are supposed to render.

Washing

Whether you want a fabric that can be machine washed or something that needs to be dry cleaned is a significant consideration. If you want low maintenance and cheap drapes, it is best to go for linen or cotton. However, they crease easily and have to be ironed frequently. You can wash them every 4 to 6 months. Velvet, net, and lace, on the other hand, are high maintenance. They tend to catch dirt easily and must be dry appropriately cleaned every two months.

Getting the right curtain can decide the vibe of your room altogether. It sets the mode and ties all the furniture and accessories in harmony. So, do not forget to consider the factors mentioned above the next time you go curtain shopping.
